Sunpower reviews

All about Sunpower:

Sunpower has maintained a positive reputation in its more than 30 years in the industry. The company holds an A+ rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Sunpower is an American firm that provides high quality solar panels. Some models are being developed by its spin-off Maxion Solar Technologies. The company’s products are widely regarded as among the best available.

Sunpower Maxion solar panels are currently the most efficient on the market, are likely to be the best at tolerating partial shade, and have a 40-year replacement product warranty in Australia (see further notes on warranty below) ). In addition, SunPower panels are corrosion resistant, making them suitable for installation anywhere in Australia.

SunPower has an Australian office in Melbourne.

I looked at SunPower panels in June 2016 and you can read what I published here, although some of the information is now out of date. I also wrote about how SunPower replaced some panels under their performance warranty in 2018.

Sunpower reviews

Productivity and output

At the beginning of 2018, SunPower had 1.2 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity and 1.9 GW of solar panel manufacturing capacity.

In 2019, the company shipped 2.5 GW of modules, representing 80% growth over 2018.

Current productivity is unclear but was expected to increase significantly under Maxion. In April 2021, Maxeon Solar Technologies said it planned to use existing facilities to ramp up 1.8 GW of new capacity, followed by another 1.8GW at a new facility.

Manufacturing locations

Sunpower is as American as apple pie and so is the majority of a French oil company. This makes sense because the French were eating apple pie long before the Americans.

SunPower is headquartered in San Jose, California. They stopped manufacturing in the United States for a long time but then restarted operations at a plant they bought from SolarWorld America to avoid Trump’s solar panel tariffs. But in January 2021, SunPower announced it was closing its Hillsboro plant. This means Maxion now manufactures all models of SunPower panels except the Performance (P) series.

Maxion has a production capacity in Malaysia, the Philippines, and Mexico. SunPower formed a joint venture to manufacture its P-series panels in China.

Company History

SunPower was founded in 1985 by Richard Swanson, who was responsible for Swanson Law. It says that for every doubling of productivity, the cost of solar panels falls by 20 percent. Despite the fluctuations in prices, it has proven to be almost correct and I hope that its effect will continue in the future.

Sunpower reviews

As it has managed to survive for 37 years, SunPower is one of the oldest solar panel manufacturers in existence.

However, in November 2019, SunPower announced that it would spin off its solar panel manufacturing to a new company – Maxeon Solar Technologies. The process was completed in August 2020, and now the company’s panels, other than the P Series, are marketed as “SunPower Maxeon”.

SunPower Maxeon’s 40-year replacement product warranty

In February 2022, Maxeon Solar Technologies announced that the product and performance warranty on panels sold under the SunPower Maxeon brand in Australia had been extended from 25 years to 40 years. As for the Sunpower Maxeon 5 AC, 40 years covers the panel alone, while the integrated microinverter is covered under Enphase’s 25-year warranty.

It should be noted that the product warranty for SunPower P series panels (i.e. non-Maxion branded) is still 25 years.

Maxon’s product warranty (and that of the P Series) commits to either repair, replace or refund the purchase price of defective PV modules. It used to be that all SunPower panels were covered by a full replacement warranty, rather than the company also having repair/refund options.

Reliability of the panel

While these figures are now out of date, SunPower has previously stated that its panel failure rate is only 1 in 37,000. Hopefully, it’s even better now, although I know some panels have been replaced under warranty. Since most of their panels at the time were less than 25 years old, that doesn’t mean there’s only a one in 37,000 chance of a panel failing during the 25-year warranty period, but it’s still suggestive. That they are very reliable.

Below, I’ll review our SunPower solar panels that we have on our roof here in Texas, 3+ months after they were first installed on Tuesday. I will evaluate the overall process time, quality of installation, financing, app, and other factors. For each factor, I will give SunPower a score from 0 to 5, with 0 being the worst and 5 being the best for each factor. Overall, I have given SunPower a score of 41.5 out of 45. There are areas where it could improve, which is true for all of us. My overall recommendation: I highly recommend the panels and the company.

Sunpower reviews

Ukraine is sinking into oblivion due to Russian aggression. Anything we can do to cut funding to this murderous government is in the world’s best interest. Solar panels are great for avoiding burning coal and natural gas, saving tons of CO2 each year and greatly reducing your annual electricity costs. I own nominal shares in Ford, SunPower, Sunrun, and Tesla.

This was the lowest scoring area for Sunpower. Due to some unforced errors, our average lead time (time from process start to finish) took 5 months. The biggest factor here was Home Owner Association (HOA) approval, which took 3 months from October to January. I gave Sunpower a power of attorney to negotiate and submit the necessary documents for our solar panels on our behalf. The first time they submitted wrong and incomplete documents. By the time they found out what was wrong with the HOA guidelines, two months had passed. If you are looking for solar panels and you have an HOA, get the necessary documents required by the HOA and submit them yourself. Our Architectural Review Committee meets once a month. If something is wrong, we have to wait another month. Texas performance at its best (sarcasm). Not everyone will be as patient as I was to get a solar panel. A neighbor in the community installed panels on his roof in 2 months, starting to finish using Tesla.

After we had HOA approval, SunPower was able to schedule the panel installation within 3 to 4 weeks. That seems reasonable, and that’s why I gave SunPower 5 out of 5.

Panel installation time – 3 hours. Score: 5 out of 5

22 solar panels were installed on my south facing roof within 3 hours. This involved running cable through the attic, under my gutters, and along the electrical box. In a few days, another person came, installed the Sunpower monitoring box, connected the electrical wires, painted the cable next to my gutters, and did a preliminary inspection. The second person took 1 extra hour. States could do a lot better to make solar approval easier. It shouldn’t take much time to do the installation to get approval.

It took 1 month after the solar panels were installed to get my utility to install the two sided panels. Sunpower said they would follow up, but after a month there has been no result. I called the utility directly, they apologized and said they were backed up, and then installed a two-way meter the next day. Power was turned off for 5 minutes and a new two-way meter was installed. This meter calculates how much power you receive from the grid and how much you send back.

Note: Even if you don’t have a bi-directional meter setup, the panels are still powering your home. You will not receive any credit for what you send back to the grid.

App quality. Score: 4 out of 5

The app has some nice features and has a lot of potentials. If you have a battery, you can see the power flow in real time between your home, the battery, solar power, and the grid. If you only have solar power, I recommend Sunpower to do this. Right now, I have to switch between my local utility app and the SunPower app to get all the home usage information. Our utility app is a day behind. SunPower has a real opportunity to simplify the user experience.

A sample of what the app looks like with batteries

Image taken from SunPower’s website, showing real-time power flow in the app for battery users.

App features I like: Real-time power readings, energy production every 15 minutes, plus a day, month, year, lifetime, and custom energy and power generation. I really like to see how much CO2 we’ve saved, tree equivalents planted, miles not driven, and gasoline saved. I would love to see how much water is saved by installing solar panels.

The app tells you the system size. It hasn’t worked during my time with the app. I discussed this issue with Sana last week. Sana is in the public relations department of Sunpower. She said she would take it up with her engineers and get it fixed.

By back-of-the-envelope calculations, any decent-sized solar panel system will save more CO2 for less cost than most mid-range and high-end EVs.

Sunpower reviews

financing. Score: 6 out of 5

Tesla’s financing is now 4.49%, down 10%, and over 10 years. SunPower partnered me with Tech CU in California. They offered me 1.99%, 0% down, and a 25 year term. For the same $100, I can finance a 4 kW system with Tesla and a 7 kW system with SunPower. I am trying to add more panels and the interest rate will be higher. Nevertheless, it will be less than 4.49 percent.

Easy financing is key to the rapid expansion of residential solar power. We need more panels, higher efficiency at lower upfront and monthly cost. At this low rate, the solar financing rate is lower than my mortgage rate. Since the financing is a credit union, any extra money they receive is used to benefit the owners of the credit union. SunPower did a great job partnering with Tech CU. Note: Once financing is set up, you have 30 days to increase the financing amount with TechCU.

While solar panels will lower your overall energy costs, making you a better credit risk, the financial system will reduce your credit as one more loan. This is another way that the current financial system works hand-in-hand to promote fossil fuel suppliers. Choose a financing company that wants to help promote solar and renewable energy.

Misc. Score: 4.5 out of 5

SunPower has partnered with 17 of California’s 20 leading homebuilders to efficiently incorporate solar energy into new homes from the blueprint. Their latest was Landsey Holmes on March 1. I look forward to expanding this program across the country. It’s easy for people to add solar as they build a new home. Ford has partnered with Sunrun to install solar and EV chargers at home. SunPower can expand solar power relationships with other auto manufacturers.

One thing I appreciate — SunPower makes it easy to add solar or batteries to an existing system in the future.

Batteries and virtual power plants are in the early stages of expansion. If you want batteries, Tesla Powerwalls through SunPower will cost much more than Powerwalls directly from Tesla. SunPower’s own battery offering is based on LFP chemistry.

As I said at the beginning, I would highly recommend SunPower for your solar panels. I am asking everyone in my community to take a look. I am eagerly awaiting their own battery offering in Texas.

Sunpower Maxion solar panels resist the effects of heat.

Solar panels suffer from much less efficiency loss due to heat effects than average panels. Their coefficient of Pmax ranges from about -0.29% to -0.37%/°C depending on the model, while the average is around -0.4%. Thus, for every degree Celsius in their output, the panel temperature drops by more than 25 degrees. Note that the panel temperature in the sun can be much higher than the air temperature and can reach 65 degrees on hot days.

Sunpower panels tolerate partial shade well.

Partial shading can cause a large drop in solar cell efficiency because one poorly performing solar cell can drag down the efficiency of others, so it could just be a bird poop.

Positive reviews mention the responsiveness and knowledge of SunPower’s customer support representatives and the savings from the company’s solar panels. More critical reviews point to scheduling difficulties or problems with long-term maintenance of Maxion equipment.

“I am very pleased with the SunPower system. My first electric bill after installation was [$0]. The staff was very responsive to all my questions and I felt they personalized my experience. My coordinator Valerie Really listened to me and kept me updated throughout the process. If an issue came up, I felt like I could reach out and get an answer the same day. Thank you, SunPower.” Priscilla H. via BBB

“I had trouble logging into the Sunpower site as they recently rebuilt their site. When I contacted the online chat support, they were able to log me in very quickly. The SunPower site is great for anyone who owns a solar system. It provides all the information a homeowner could ask for in real time. BBB via Michael W.

“They do not follow up in a timely manner when something goes wrong. I have been waiting 5 weeks for someone to come and investigate what is going wrong with my over $20k cash payment system.” – Rosemary S. Through the BBB

“Almost all of the panels are now noticeably discolored. A solar rep suggested that it might be delamination (?). The company that installed them is out of business hence the need to connect directly to Sunpower. After months of back and forth with Sunpower via email, they said earlier this year that they would replace all the panels (24). … Then they offered no warranty and no liability. took back the decision, claiming . If it had been one or two panels, it would have been one thing. But the fact that almost all 24 appeared to be defective would point to a possible manufacturing defect. Laura M. via BBB

Consultation: A representative will set up a free virtual consultation with homeowners where you can ask any questions and learn about the system design. If your home is approved, the company will provide a proposal that outlines your system’s design, estimated cost, and how it meets your energy and ultimate goals.

Permitting: SunPower will complete any required paperwork and obtain required permits and approvals from your local municipality and utility company. Depending on your county’s regulations, this process may take a few weeks.

Installation: You work with SunPower to schedule an installation day for your system using one of its certified partners. Sunpower installations typically take less than a day, but more complex systems can take longer.

Final Inspection: Before you can get a Permit to Work (PTO), your city and utility company must have a final inspection. SunPower will schedule these inspections for you, and the company will notify you when you’re clear to turn on your system and start saving.

Sunpower cost and financing options

Solar power can be a bit pricey, costing up to $22,440. Hence, they offer multiple financing options to help you.

Full Purchase: This is the most cost-effective payment option. When you buy a solar system upfront, you save money by avoiding additional long-term costs. You can also take advantage of any federal solar tax credits and rebates.

Solar Loan: You pay a low monthly fee to own solar panels based on your credit. You still own the solar energy system and can take advantage of tax incentives with a solar loan. Still, the interest rates associated with financing options will add to your costs over time.

Solar Lease: A solar lease means SunPower retains ownership of the panels, and you pay a monthly fee to buy the electricity they produce. Think of it like you’re still paying your regular electric bill. Your monthly payments will be lower than the average electricity bill, but you can’t use any tax incentives.

SunPower’s 25-year warranty covers 100% of repair or replacement costs and helps most homeowners avoid complications from these issues.

Solar panels typically cost at least $3.30 per watt while the national average is closer to $3 per watt. SunPower systems range in price before incentives from $12,500 for a four kW system to more than $39,000 for a 12 kW system.

As with any solar project, pay close attention to financing options. Any type of lease will increase the total cost of your project and you need more time to recover your investment. Also, if you don’t make all the lease payments, the lender can repossess the solar equipment.

Is Sunpower Right for You?

SunPower is considered a top-notch solar company as it offers the most efficient solar panels in the market. Those panels come with an increased price tag and SunPower runs more expensive than competitors. However, those competitors often can’t match SunPower’s age and performance. Some experts have said that SunPower isn’t worth the price, but each homeowner can make that decision based on their own values.

Sunpower Panel Options

Sunpower offers high quality monocrystalline solar panels. SunPower’s panels last 25 to 40 years and have an efficiency range of 20.1%–30%. This rate is higher than the average rate of 15%–20%. SunPower has four solar panel lines:

M Series: These are SunPower’s premier, high-power solar panels. They have built-in micro-inverters to convert direct current (DC) energy into alternating current (AC) electricity.

  • X Series: These high efficiency solar panels have either a white or black backing. They are ideal for homes with less ceiling space.

SunPower Solar Panels are one of the most sought-after solar panel brands on the EnergySage Solar marketplace, and for good reason. SunPower panels are often the most efficient (read: powerful!) products on the market today, and they offer industry-leading warranties. For many years, SunPower has been a fully integrated solar shop: manufacturing solar cells and panels, and then also offering sales and installation services for residential and commercial applications. Although they are considered some of the best panels, they come at a premium price. In 2019, SunPower announced that it was spinning off its manufacturing arm into a new company – Maxeon – to focus on installing solar panels.

  • About the power of the sun
  • SunPower is based in San Jose, California and has long been focused on developing innovative solar photovoltaic products for the commercial solar market. Recently, however, SunPower divested its manufacturing arm to a new company Maxion, and acquired US solar installation company Blue Raven Solar in 2021. That signals a shift in focus as SunPower redoubles its efforts in the residential solar market.
  • In May 2022, Maxeon also announced a new partnership with CED Greentech. This will allow SunPower to more efficiently distribute its solar products to residential customers in the U.S. and around the world by January 2023.

SunPower already makes the most efficient home solar panels and offers the best warranty around. The solar panels were also the first in the world to be Cradle to Cradle certified, meaning they are the most durable solar panels available. The recognition is based on the company’s use and reuse of materials, manufacturing using renewable energy, water stewardship, and social justice.

Maxion is one of the few solar panel companies that produces a strong sustainability report every year. According to a 2021 Maxion report, an external evaluation found that the environmental payback period for its Maxion 3 panels was less than one year. Depending on the system, renewable energy systems took 0.13 to 0.92 years to produce the same amount of energy it took to produce the product. Considering the longevity of the panels, this means that the energy return can be 100 times greater than the energy required for production.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) uses SunPower solar panels on its rover projects. NASA began using solar panels to power unmanned aerial vehicles in 1997. Since SunPower panels power the Greenland Rover, the company has designed high-efficiency cells specifically for the NASA/AeroVironment Helios and Pathfinder solar-powered aircraft.

Solar energy equipment

SunPower offers four lines of solar panels, distinguished primarily by wattage and aesthetics. These are M series, A series, X series and E series. All panels are high-performance monocrystalline designs with half-cut technology and efficiencies greater than 20%.

The degradation rate of these panels is also really impressive, with barely any performance degradation over the 25-year warranty period. In fact, SunPower is so confident in the panels that it offers an efficiency guarantee of 92% of their original output at the 25-year mark for some models.

The high efficiency of SunPower solar panels means you can pack more output into a smaller space. Yes, SunPower panels are slightly more expensive than other solar panels, but the high efficiency means it works out at a fairly similar cost per watt. If your roof is partially shaded or you live in a cloudy area, solar panels are also a great choice because they are designed to maintain energy production even in these conditions.

SunPower’s efficient panels are also a great choice for homeowners who own or want to own an electric vehicle. This is because the panels can meet high energy needs, such as for charging an EV, while taking up less roof space than traditional panels. In fact, SunPower customers will soon be able to add Valbo.

How much does Sunpower Solar cost?

SunPower Solar will typically cost between $15,000 and $40,000. System costs depend largely on where you are, how much electricity your system needs to generate, and what type of solar panels you choose.

One of the things that can help with the total cost of your SunPower solar system is the type of panels you choose and the roof space you have. Sometimes traditional panels are a bit tricky about where they can be placed and how they will work. The great thing about SunPower is that they can be installed in a smaller space than traditional panels, and still have a strong performance warranty.

SunPower will assist you with incentive, loan and savings options to help you keep the total cost of your solar energy system low. Still, they are certainly not the cheapest solar provider on the market.

SunPower Solar strives to offer the lowest panels with the highest efficiency. From a product warranty point of view, this is a positive. SunPower offers its Full Confidence Warranty which ensures that your solar panels are working for 25 years. The way to test the functionality of these solar panels would be to use a mobile app with a monitoring system.

If you notice that the solar battery starts to fail or have a problem producing the wattage you need, the company will see what it can do from a warranty standpoint. Keep in mind, as we were reading these SunPower reviews, that there were very few complaints about the panels’ ability to produce electricity.

One downside to the renewable energy movement is that it’s still a bit expensive for homeowners. Taking advantage of SunPower’s warranty can help you feel more confident about the purchase you’re making.

Financing plans and options

When paying for a home solar system, you can either pay in full or finance the solar panel systems and installation costs. SunPower has three options when it comes to financing and affording their panels. Remember that apart from being a solar panel manufacturer, SunPower is also an installation company.

Full purchase

An outright purchase typically allows you to pay for your entire solar panel purchase upfront, and then you’ll reap the full benefits of the savings involved in switching to solar. A full purchase requires a large out-of-pocket investment, but it helps that the current federal tax exemption still holds, offering a 26% savings.

Loan/Financing

A loan or financing option is the most popular option among most solar installers. With this plan, you will be able to pay a portion of the total cost of the solar system and then finance the rest. The great thing about this option is that you are likely to have extra money in your pocket due to lower energy costs, and that money can be used to pay off debt.

Solar lease

A solar lease is when you don’t own the solar panels, and they are actually owned by SunPower. With a solar lease, you’ll pay SunPower for your electricity at a much lower price than what you’re currently paying. The only downside here is that you don’t own the panels.

Specials or incentives offered

While there aren’t any specials or incentives currently being offered, here are a few things SunPower touts as reasons to go with its panels when making your decision.

If you have a good credit score and a strong history of paying bills, you may qualify for a solar panel system with $0 down. In addition, SunPower will fix a monthly loan rate for you within a range that you can afford. It all depends on the availability in your area as well as your financial history.

Having a solar lease option and several different solar panels to choose from will help you fine-tune the system you can afford. Sustainability and going off the grid are all important, but you also need to be able to afford the lifestyle.

Federal and local incentives

SunPower will help you understand which credit and incentives are best for your home. The federal tax credit is known as the best overall option for homeowners because it currently saves 26% on the total amount owed on your system. 26% will come back to you as a tax credit, but the program is set to expire in 2024.

In addition to federal incentives, there are local options to save money. The fact that solar power is offered in all 50 states can be of great benefit to those in solar-prone states. If your area is known for its push toward green energy, you may see additional state or local incentives.

In-house or contracted installations

Currently, SunPower Solar has access to install solar panel systems in all 50 states. When you contact SunPower, they will give you a free quote and explain how their system works.

Sun Power may be one of the best solar energy companies in the solar energy industry. Homeowners enjoy seeing what their solar panel system will look like and how it will affect their electricity bill. With SunPower Solar, all of this is possible before you even invest in your system. SunPower is one of the only providers offering service across the US. The quality of these solar panels, combined with the history of the industry, makes SunPower Solar the perfect choice for many homeowners looking to go green this year.

  • At GI Energy we can install any solar panel for your home or business. This means we are able to write honest reviews expressing our true opinions, without being biased by having SunPower Solar Panels, or any other solar panel in stock! This article details the opinion of our Business Development Director, who has 12 years of experience in the PV industry.

We review a lot of solar products at GI Energy and most of the time we have to start by addressing the fact that the product we’re writing about is from a large, fast-growing Chinese manufacturer. has been created with huge profits and a plan to take over the world. ..well maybe not part of the whole world, but you know what I mean! The majority of solar panels available for purchase in Australia today are manufactured by large Chinese companies that produce a ridiculous number of solar panels each year. The main goal with this type of business is to keep costs down and appeal to the mass market with a decent enough product…yawn!

So, when writing about Sunpower solar panels it is great to mention that they are not your typical Chinese solar panels competitor. Sunpower targets different types of customers. They target someone who is really looking for the best quality product, with less emphasis on price than performance. And they do it very well!

Some proof of this is that SunPower manufactures the world’s most efficient solar panel – the Maxion 3! The name Maxion screams high power and reminds me of a gladiator about to do battle with tigers and lions in the coliseum! They are 400w panels and have an efficiency rating of 22.6%. Compare it to the nearest competitor for performance and the LG Neon R comes in at 21.7%. This gives SunPower clear bragging rights over all its competitors in the efficiency department. Remember here though that solar panel efficiency is calculated as watts divided by meters squared. This means that the efficiency of a solar panel actually only refers to how much energy it can produce for the space it uses. Many other solar panel manufacturers now have 400w panels – they are just as big as SunPower’s Maxeon 3. See our article on panel performance for more details. Basically, this means that efficiency ratings are a big deal, and often relate to the overall quality of the solar panel, but certainly not always, so don’t base your decision on that. . There are many other factors to consider such as:

  • Who is the manufacturer and will they be able to help with long term warranty support?
  • How will a solar panel actually work when installed on my roof?
  • How much will it cost me?

So, who is the manufacturer?

SunPower has a long commercial history and was first launched in 1985 in California. It’s a long history for solar panel makers because the industry generally didn’t gain global momentum until around 2005. Manufacturing has moved on a bit over the years, but now they have a facility back in the States. However, if you have solar panels on your roof in Australia, chances are they didn’t come from this American factory. SunPower bought its existing U.S. facility from SolarWorld in 2018 primarily to avoid Trump’s solar tariffs, which increased the cost of importing solar panels from overseas facilities. Therefore, American-made solar panels tend to stay in America! They have other facilities in Malaysia, Philippines, Mexico and China.

In 2019, SunPower reported production of 2.5GW of solar panels. This was a huge increase over previous years, but still a bit off the top of the tree in terms of volume. Genco took that spot and they shipped 14.2GW that year. In fact, SunPower won’t even get close to the top ten:

  • Junco Solar – 14.2GW (+25%)
  • JA Solar – 10.3GW (+17%)
  • Trina Solar – 9.7GW (+20%)
  • Longi Solar – 9.0GW (+25%)
  • Canadian Solar – 8.5GW (+20%)
  • Hanwa Q Sales – 7.3GW (+33%)
  • Increased Energy – 7.0GW (+46%)
  • First Solar – 5.5GW (+104%)
  • GCL – 4.8GW (+17%)
  • Shanfeng Photovoltaic – 4.0GW (+21%)

But, as mentioned earlier, SunPower is a high-efficiency solar panel manufacturer, not a high-volume company like the companies above (which are all pretty much new, Chinese-owned manufacturers).

So far so good right?

Well, unfortunately this is where we need to address the major chink in Sun Powers’ armor. According to reports, Sunpower has posted significant losses for several years from 2016 to 2019. There have also been many (unconfirmed) reports that Sunpower has been very close to bankruptcy a few times in the last 5 years. . If this happens, there is no way to tell what will happen to customer warranties, should they need them!

Unfortunately, this represents a significant setback to the overall appeal of SunPower solar panels.

For just another twist in the story, Total (a massive oil and gas company) bought 60% of SunPower in 2019, adding some value and protection. However, it is still a bit unclear who is responsible in terms of warranty, should the solar division face problems again.

Ideally, we like to see solar panel manufacturers have a diverse range of products and multiple revenue streams, even if it’s part of a parent company. While owning 60% of the company as a whole adds some credibility here, it’s too early to see what that actually means for the business and its customers. A larger, more diverse company operating the ship means they are better equipped to ride the ups and downs that the industry eventually brings. Personally, I think the security it provides is extremely valuable.

How well will the solar panel perform?

This one is easy… it will perform very, very well!

Well, let’s look a little closer. Sunpower has some of the most efficient solar panels in the world. And while that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the best solar panels, there’s no doubting the real-world performance of SunPower panels. Simply put… they are great at generating electricity!

However, they make two completely different types of panels: the Maxion, and the P-series. The Maxion is what many call a “real” solar panel. The P-Series is made in China and was introduced to significantly increase volume by giving consumers an affordable alternative to traditional solar panels. And it worked! Sunpower increased volume by 80% after introducing this panel.

The downside here is that some solar retailers and installers are just pitching SunPower panels and not mentioning the fact that they are actually installing the P Series. So, consumers who are not well informed, just think they are getting Sunpower… they don’t know they are getting the Chinese P series. The P-series still performs well, but from our own testing, it’s closer to the better-quality Maxions than the cheaper mainstream Chinese manufacturers. And, although cheaper than the Maxion, they’re still more expensive than most competitors. This brings us nicely to our next point:

How much will they cost?

If financial difficulties were the problem in SunPower’s armor, price is the sword that cuts through the chink and into the hearts of most consumers. Yes, they are a great solar panel for performance, no doubt about it! And if you want the absolute best solar panels and don’t care about cost, these are probably the panels for you, despite the financial constraints.
